Severe pain and discomfort in the great toe joints of the feet is most likely to be a problem that is commonly called gout. Gout is an inflammatory response to the uric crystals that get put into the joint when the serum levels are abnormally high. It is due to the attempt to clear the serum levels when the renal system cannot adequately perform its function. If the crystal levels are above a certain threshold, then the discomfort of gout will occur. Gout is usually managed by using medicines or alternative remedies to get the renal system to excrete more of the purines taken in from the foods that the crystals are made from. Additionally, also to treat gout, less of the purines have to be taken in as part of the food intake. Those with gout will need to take care to avoid certain foods.
